This month in Filipino American history
Filipino American History Month (FAHM) is celebrated in the United States during the month of October to commemorate the arrival of the first Filipinos who landed in what is now Morro Bay, California on October 18, 1587.
In 1898, following the conclusion of the Spanish–American War, the United States annexed the Philippine Islands which had been ruled by Spain since 1565. On October 28, 1898, President William McKinley ordered his postwar peace commission in Paris to “demand Spain turn over the Philippines to the United States.” Spain agreed to sell the Philippines for the sum of $20 million, and formally ceded Philippine sovereignty to the U.S. upon signing of the Treaty of Paris.
October is also the birth month of Filipino American labor leader, civil rights leader, and co-founder of United Farm Workers Larry Itliong. In the 1960s, Itliong and other Filipino farm workers organized the historic Delano grape strike which set the standard for the rights of farm workers across America.
